様々なカテゴリの食品、製品、サービスが環境負荷などの持続可能性要件を満たしているかどうか、その由来を手作業で確認するには途方も無い労力が必要だ。第三者機関による認証制度などを利用すれば全てを調べる手間は省けるが、それでも多種多様なカテゴリとなると認証もひとつにはとどまらない。認証制度が存在しないカテゴリも当然あるだろう。単一の原材料ではなく組み合わされたものも多いが、その場合個々の中間加工品や原材料といったサプライチェーンもたどる必要がある。 ProductBio は様々なカテゴリの食品、製品、サービス等の由来を自動的に確認できる仕組みだ。

米国では2013年11月の法改正により、9万の政府機関がEP3(Environmental Pollution Prevention Project:環境汚染防止プロジェクト)に準拠することが求められるようになり、これにより調達製品の調査に900万時間が費やされたとされている。 その自動化によるメリットは明らかであるため、政府機関によるProductBioの導入が進み始めているという。 ポイント： ●大量データの収集と連携 ●法制度という必須の要件 ●省力化 ビジネスモデル： ●経緯：EP3準拠が法制化されたことがきっかけ ●運営：ProductBioという企業 ●収入： angel.co によるファンド 大学、企業、政府機関による導入 ●ソースコード：非公開 ●データ：オープンデータ＋クローズドデータ
